My favourite apple pie
I was out picking snails of my Hostas tonight when I noticed the apple blossom on my apple tress has all but disappeared.
So when I was toying over what to write about today as apples were in my mind I thought why not give my favourite apple pie recipe!
This recipe recommends Bramley apples. Armagh has the best Bramley orchards in the British Isles. The apples unique qualities make it a very versatile ingredient, equally at home in a savory stir fry as a traditional apple pie.
Vegans should find this recipe to their liking. The recipe uses a pre-made pie crust and very few ingredients, so it’s very simple to prepare. Chopping the apples does take some time however.
There’s nothing like fresh homemade apple pie!
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2-3 Bramley apples, cored and thinly sliced
- substitute 4-5 Granny Smith if you can’t get hold of Bramley’s
- 1/3 cup margarine, softened
- 1/3 cup packed brown sugar (Bramley apples are quite bitter so you might want to increase the amount of sugar a little if you have a sweet tooth)
- 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp grated nutmeg
- 1 pre-made 9 inch pie crust
Preparation:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Places the apples in the crust. Dot with half the margarine. Stir the rest of the margarine into the brown sugar and spices and crumble this mixture on top of the apples.
Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until apples are very soft when pierced with a knife.
Whenever possible I use the Bramley because in my view it is the best apple for cooking.
